Panel: Objects of Knowledge and Belief: Sentences vs. Propositions?

چکیده
It has been an object of much controversy in the literature whether knowledge should be taken to be a relation between agents and sentences (the syntactic or sentential approach) or a relation between agents and propositions (the semantic or propositional attitude approach). In this panel, we discuss the relative merits of the two approaches.

Syntactical Treatments of Propositional Attitudes
Syntactical treatments of propositional attitudes are attractive to artiicial intelligence researchers. But results of Montague 12] and Thomason 16] seem to show that syntactical treatments are not viable. They show that if representation languages are suuciently expressive, then axiom schemes characterizing knowledge and belief give rise to paradox. De Rivi eres and Levesque 6] characterized a...
متن کاملVariations on a Montagovian theme
What are the objects of knowledge, belief, probability, apriority or analyticity? For at least some of these properties, it seems plausible that the objects are sentences, or sentence-like entities. However, results from mathematical logic indicate that sentential properties are subject to severe formal limitations. After surveying these results, I argue that they are more problematic than ofte...
متن کاملThe Ramsey Test and the Indexicality of Conditionals: A Proposed Resolution of Gärdenfors' Paradox
Working within the AGM approach, Peter Gärdenfors has proved that — given certain auxiliary assumptions — there are no non-trivial belief revision systems that satisfy both the Ramsey test and the Preservation condition. There are various ways of reacting to Gärdenfors' paradoxical result. Gärdenfors himself has described his result as a dilemma: we must give up either the Ramsey test or the Pr...

1. Logical language 1.1. Proposition, sentence and inscription Quine has argued in favor of the rejection of propositions. His argument can be summarized by the following syllogism: No entity without identity There is no criterion of identity for propositions No propositions Quine has been quite influential in the replacement of the expression propositional logic by the expression sentential lo...
متن کاملTruth, Belief and Certainty in Epistemic Logic
Standard logic tends to reduce propositions to their truth conditions. However propositions with the same truth conditions are not the contents of the same thoughts just as they are not the senses of synonymous sentences. I will first define a much finer criterion of propositional identity that takes into account predications that we make in expressing propositions. In my view, propositions hav...
